PETER T. CREAN

PETER T. Crean is a senior trial partner at Martin Clearwater & Bell LLP, the oldest and largest boutique medical malpractice defense firm in New York. He is leader of the firm’s Professional Liability and Health Care Law practice groups, and for over 18 years has served as a member of the Executive Committee.

Crean has more than 40 years of experience, and represents numerous major university medical centers in New York, as well as individual physicians in large damage matters and state investigations. He is noted for the successful defense of the landmark Libby Zion case, which involved the defense of claims for punitive damages against an academic medical center, claims of system-wide supervision failures and sleep deprivation.

Crean also handled the successful defense of claims involving former New York Yankee player Alex Rodriguez in court as well as in the media.

Drawing on his expertise, Crean has served on the Board of Trustees for a community hospital, and also as chair of the hospital’s Quality Assurance Committee.

Crean is a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. He has been recognized by Best Lawyers in America and New York Super Lawyers since inception. Best Lawyers named him 2020 Lawyer of the Year for legal malpractice defense in New York City. He maintains an AV Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell, and has also been selected to America’s Top 100 Attorneys.

Crean is a member of the American Health Lawyers Association (Fraud and Abuse, Healthcare Liability and Litigation Committee), the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, the New York State and Westchester bar associations (member, Health Law Section) and a member of the Defense Research Institute.

Crean earned a BA from the University of Massachusetts, and a JD from Fordham University School of Law.

Crean, a member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, traces his roots back to Co. Kerry where both his grandmother and grandfather were born and raised on the Dingle Peninsula. He is a distant nephew of the famous Irish explorer Tom Crean, who accompanied Shackleton to the South Pole.

Crean is married with three children. His son Patrick played basketball professionally for the Dublin Saints and was named All-Ireland Player of the Month. He is a member of Waterville Golf Links in Co. Kerry. Crean and his family travel back to Ireland every year.
