EDWARD J. FANNING, Jr.

EDWARD J. Fanning, Jr. is a partner at McCarter & English, and is based in the firm’s Newark, New Jersey office.

Fanning has extensive civil litigation experience with a focus on defense of claims against manufacturers of pharmaceuticals, medical devices, consumer products, and industrial equipment. He appears regularly in federal and state courts in New Jersey and across the country, defending class actions and mass tort litigation, including matters brought under consumer protection and consumer fraud statutes including the New Jersey Consumer Fraud Act, the Truth-in-Consumer Contract, Warranty and Notice Act, and the Telephone Consumer Protection Act.

Fanning has performed extensive appellate work, including appeals to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and the New Jersey Supreme Court. In addition, he has a very active amicus curiae practice, appearing regularly before New Jersey’s highest court and the Third Circuit representing the interests of the state’s trade associations and medical technology manufacturers on key legal issues.

Fanning was honored by the New Jersey Commission on Professionalism in the Law and the New Jersey Defense Association as a 2015 Professional Lawyer of the Year. He is past president and a member of the Board of Directors of the New Jersey Defense Association, the leading organization of civil defense trial attorneys in New Jersey.

Fanning has been recognized by Chambers USA since 2017, New Jersey Super Lawyers since 2005, Best Lawyers in America (2017-2023), and the International Who’s Who of Product Liability Defence Lawyers. He maintains an AV Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell.

Fanning earned a BA from Boston College, and a JD from Georgetown University Law Center.

Married with four children, Fanning’s mother Anne was born and raised in Cork City. His paternal grandmother was raised on a farm in Co. Roscommon. Fanning is a member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick in New York, and the O’Mahony Society.
