PETER J. KELLY

PETER J. Kelly is Surrogate Court judge of Queens County, New York.

Prior to his judicial career, Kelly held various positions in the New York City Criminal and Civil, as well as New York State Supreme and Surrogate’s courts.

Kelly was elected to the New York City Civil Court in 1998 and New York State Supreme Court in 2002. He was elected as Surrogate in 2010 and has been responsible for overseeing all estates and guardianships for the 2.3 million residents of Queens County since then.

In addition to his judicial duties, Kelly has been a frequent lecturer at bar associations, civic groups, and charitable organizations. He has served on the Surrogate’s Court Advisory Committee to the Chief Judge for the last 10 years, and is chairperson of the Executive Committee of the New York State Surrogate’s Association.

Kelly is a graduate of Iona College and St. John’s University School of Law. Kelly is a member of numerous bar associations and professional organizations, especially the Queens County St. Patrick’s Society, the Brehon Law Society, the Friendly Sons of Long Island and the American Irish Historical Society.

Kelly’s paternal Irish ancestors immigrated to America in the middle 1800s from Co. Longford. His maternal ancestors trace their lineage to Co. Leitrim.
