SIOBHAN MILEY

SIOBHAN Miley is legal adviser and sanctions coordinator at the Permanent Mission of Ireland to the United Nations for its two-year term on the UN Security Council. She also provides legal assistance and advice on Sixth Committee matters, the primary forum for the consideration of legal questions in the UN General Assembly.

Educated in Ireland, France and the U.S., Miley earned her bachelor of civil law (law and French) from University College Cork and was called to the bar in 2012 after having successfully completed the King’s Inns barrister-at-law degree course. She studied French and EU law as part of her Erasmus year abroad at Robert Schuman University, Strasbourg, where she also worked at the European Parliament.

Miley also studied international law and human rights law at LLM level at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Her first experience of working in law in the U.S. was at the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office in 1999.

In addition to her legal background, Miley also has extensive diplomatic experience, having joined Ireland’s Foreign Ministry in 2000. She has served on diplomatic postings at Ireland’s embassies in Washington, D.C. and London, and at the Consulate of Ireland in San Francisco.

Miley also has substantial multilateral experience on European Union, Council of Europe and OSCE (Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe) matters which has provided her with a practical knowledge and understanding of how public international law impacts Ireland’s foreign policy.

A native of Co. Monaghan, Miley is married with one daughter.
