CATHERINE A. MOHAN

CATHERINE A. Mohan is practice group leader of the Products Liability, Mass Torts and Consumer Class Actions group at McCarter & English. She founded the firm’s Hartford office in 2001 and was its managing partner until 2003.

In 2011, Mohan became the first woman to serve as treasurer for the firm, a position she held for 10 years. She continues to serve on the firm’s Finance Committee and is also a member of the Social Justice Project Task Force.

Mohan’s primary areas of practice are complex product liability, toxic tort, pharmaceutical, environmental and personal injury litigation. She represents multinational companies throughout the U.S. in matters involving all manner of causative agents, and is recognized by clients and peers as one of the most experienced asbestos defense lawyers in the Northeast, having developed strategies for resolving thousands of cases nationally for over 30 years. While based in Hartford, Mohan’s practice involves a significant focus on matters litigated in courts across the country.

Mohan has been listed in the 2018-2023 editions of Best Lawyers in America, and was named a Lawyer of the Year for Mass Tort Litigation/Class Actions–Defendants for four consecutive years, from 2019-2022.

Committed to public service, Mohan is an active member of the firm’s pro bono practice, representing children in immigration court through the Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) program, and volunteering with the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Immigration Freedom Initiative at the Stewart Detention Center in Georgia. Her pro bono work also includes representing a family from Afghanistan seeking asylum in the U.S.

In her community outside of work, Mohan is a former president of the Greater Hartford Legal Aid Foundation. She also served as deputy mayor of Wethersfield, Connecticut, and was a member of the Wethersfield Board of Education for four years.

Mohan is also a longtime supporter of Mercy Housing and Shelter Corporation, a nonprofit devoted to helping people overcome mental illness and homelessness. She has served as a trustee on Mercy’s board for a number of years, chaired its gala committee, and was the creative force behind the Mercy Breakfast Club, a volunteer program offering high school students an opportunity to perform community service and experience making a difference first hand.

Mohan earned a BA, magna cum laude, from Wheaton College, and a JD from Georgetown University Law Center.

Mohan and her husband Brendan Hallisey have twin daughters, Maura and Catherine. Her father was a native of Co. Galway. Her maternal grandparents were from counties Offaly and Westmeath. She regularly travels to Ireland to visit with family and renew ties to her ancestral homeland.
