JOHN J. HAMILL

JOHN Hamill is a partner with DLA Piper out of Chicago. He co-chairs the firm’s U.S. Business & Commercial Litigation group.

Hamill is a preeminent first chair commercial litigator, having steered clients through complex matters that run the course in business litigation across myriad topics and industry sectors. He runs an active pro bono practice representing a wide range of indigent and non-profit clients who need access to sophisticated services.

He has tried multiple civil rights cases for pro bono clients. His work has been recognized by Chambers USA, Chambers Global, Legal 500, and the National Law Journal.

Hamill earned a BA in economics, summa cum laude, from the University of Notre Dame, and a JD, cum laude, from Harvard Law School.

Hamill and his wife Rammina have three children: Jack, Julia, and Sophia.

Separate from his firm work, his personal commentary has appeared on Smerconish.com, in the Chicago Sun-Times, and in the Irish Voice.

Hamill’s paternal great grandparents are from Kilcar, Co., Donegal; the ancestral surname is O’Hamill. His great grandfather Michael “Pop” Hamill came to Brooklyn to help build what became the Long Island Rail Road. Hamill describes himself as an unofficial member of his own self-declared Phil Coulter fan club, in honor of the Co. Derry-born musician, and he swears by Loreena McKennitt’s haunting rendition of “Bonnie Portmore.”
