PETER D. KENNEDY

PETER D. Kennedy is a shareholder at Graves, Dougherty, Hearon & Moody in Austin, Texas. He practices at the intersection of law and disruptive technologies, communications, intellectual property and constitutional limits on governmental regulation.

Kennedy first earned national attention in 1993 as lead trial lawyer for Austin-based Steve Jackson Games in a lawsuit against the U.S. Secret Service that helped establish limits on searches and seizures of email.

Kennedy has been recognized by The Best Lawyers in America since 2005, and was named Austin First Amendment Litigation Lawyer of the Year in 2017. He maintains an AV Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell.

Kennedy earned a BA, magna cum laude, from Southwestern University, and a JD from the University of Chicago School of Law.

Married with three children, Kennedy’s great grandfather Thomas Kennedy was born in Co. Wexford and came to America around 1822. His great great grandfather James Dillon, Jr. and his father, James, Sr., and his great great grandmothers Mary Powers and Anastasia Ryan were born in Ireland and immigrated to New York City during the Famine era; Kennedy is in the process of trying to identify their home counties.
