JOHN B. MORIARTY, Jr.

JOHN B. Moriarty, Jr. is chief legal officer and corporate secretary of Olema Oncology, a clinical stage development company focusing on women’s cancers based in San Francisco.

Previously, he was executive vice president and general counsel of Portola Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and oversaw the company’s legal and governance functions, and was managing director for Portola Pharmaceuticals B.V. and oversaw the company’s Netherlands operations.

Prior to joining Portola, Moriarty was executive vice president and general counsel for Alexion Pharmaceuticals, an S&P 500 company, and was responsible for overseeing all global legal matters in the 50 countries within which Alexion operates. Prior to joining Alexion, Moriarty was senior vice president and general counsel of Elan Corporation, a public biopharmaceutical company based in Dublin and San Francisco. He also held senior legal roles at Amgen, the world’s largest biotechnology company, where he was executive director and associate general counsel, global commercial operations with legal responsibilities for a multi-billion dollar oncology franchise and complex litigation.

Earlier in his career, Moriarty was in private practice with the healthcare and life sciences practice of a national law firm, and served as a healthcare fraud prosecutor with the Virginia Office of the Attorney General and the U.S. Attorney’s Office as a special assistant U.S. attorney.

Moriarty earned a BA, with distinction, from the University of Virginia and a JD, cum laude, from University of Georgia School of Law.

Married with three children, Moriarty traces his Irish ancestry to Co. Clare, where his people came from in the 1700s and 1800s. While he was with Elan Corporation, he spent five years commuting to Dublin. During his time as general counsel of Alexion Pharmaceuticals, he led its expansion into Ireland from 2014-2018, and worked closely with the Irish Industrial Development Agency.
