JOHN J. BUCKLEY, Jr.

JOHN J. Buckley is senior counsel at Williams & Connolly LLP in Washington, D.C. Senior counsel since 2018, he was a partner for almost four decades.

Buckley’s practice focuses on domestic and international commercial arbitration and investor-state arbitration. He is the founder and former head of the firm’s International Arbitration Practice Group.

Buckley’s experience in arbitration and litigation spans a wide range of industries and issues, including energy, oil and gas patents, biotechnology, medical devices, foreign and U.S. investment, civil engineering and construction, financial transactions derivatives, professional liability, ethics and malpractice. From 2015 to 2020, Buckley was visiting clinical lecturer at Yale Law School, where he taught advocacy in international arbitration. He has been consistently listed as among the top U.S. commercial arbitration practitioners in Euromoney’s Guide to the World’s Leading Experts in Commercial Arbitration and is frequently an invited speaker at arbitration conferences.

In 2021 Buckley became the inaugural recipient of the International Institute for Conflict Prevention & Resolution’s (CPR) Partner of the Year Award for his contributions to CPR and alternative dispute resolution. He is a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, and an elected member of the American Law Institute.

Buckley earned an AB, magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, from Georgetown University, and a JD, Order of the Coif, with honors, from the University of Chicago.

Married with four children, Buckley’s father was a native of Co. Limerick. All four of his grandparents hailed from counties Limerick and Cork.
