CATHERINE STETSON

CATHERINE “Cate” Stetson is the co-director of the Appellate Practice Group at Hogan Lovells. Based in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office, she is also an elected member of the firm’s Global Board.

Stetson has argued over 100 appeals and dozens of trial court matters. Her respected practice sees her arguing a diverse range of high stakes and complex appeals, including multiple arguments before the United States Supreme Court, in all but one of the 13 federal circuits, and in state appellate courts ranging from New York to California, and in district courts spanning the country from Alaska to Vermont.

Stetson is an elected member of the American Law Institute, a fellow of the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers, and serves on the D.C. Circuit’s Advisory Committee on Judicial Conduct.

Stetson was recognized by The American Lawyer in 2011 as one of the Top 45 Women Under 45 among Am Law 200 firms. She is also annually named by Washington, D.C. Super Lawyers, The Legal 500 US, and Chambers USA.

Stetson earned a BA, cum laude, from Duke University, and a JD, Order of the Coif, from the University of Virginia School of Law.

Stetson and her husband John Martin Faust have two daughters, Lucy and Caroline.

Stetson’s maternal grandmother Catherine Quillinan was a native of Kilmacthomas, Co. Waterford. Her maternal great-grandfather likely came from Co. Down.
